Singer/songwriter Thomas Mars, bassist Deck D'Arcy and guitarists Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz met while growing up in the Paris suburb of Versailles and began performing Prince and Hank Williams covers before honing in on their own sound. Although Phoenix released their debut album back in 2000—Alphabetical (2004) and It's Never Been Like That (2006) came next—the band blew up in 2009 thanks to a pair of hits off Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: "1901" and "Listzomania." After "1901" appeared in a television commercial for Cadillac, the band performed the can't-help-but-dance-along track on Saturday Night Live and the Late Show with David Letterman.
The French foursome thanked co-producer Philippe Zdar—who also helmed Phoenix's debut album United—along with their labels and press at the Grammys. Lead singer Thomas Mars also gave thanks to his partner, filmmaker Sofia Coppola. Paste magazine recently reports that Mars and Coppola have more than a few collaborations on the way. Coppola is reportedly pregnant with the couple's second child and is adapting Phoenix's song "Love Like a Sunset" into a film. Mars is also writing the score to Coppola's Somewhere.
Bonnaroo will take place at its usual Manchester, Tenn. location from June 10-13 and will also feature performances by the Flaming Lips, Jay-Z, Weezer, Norah Jones, the Xx, Wale, Steve Martin, Regina Spektor, John Fogerty, Ingrid Michaelson, Medeski, the Avett Brothers and Bassnectar, to name a few. Phoenix is about to add a few more American cultural touchstones to the list, as the band will perform at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in the coming months. Phoenix will perform on the final day of Coachella, which runs from April 16-18 at Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. The 2010 Coachella lineup also includes performances by Vampire Weekend, Thom Yorke, MGMT, Spoon, Muse, Passion Pit, Jay-Z, Them Crooked Vultures and more.
While recently on vacation in Belize (likely resting up before Phoenix embarks on a North American tour later this spring), Mars spoke with the New York Times about musical inspirations (My Bloody Valentine and D'Angelo, to name two) and the band's recent Grammy win. When asked about what the award meant for the band, Mars said, "More than we thought, I think. Even if we want to create our own rules and be as different as we can, it's a nice feeling that sometimes music makes you feel like you belong to some sort of tradition. We are French; the Grammy is a very abstract thing. Basically it's been like that since the beginning of this U.S. adventure. We do things, and we do not really know how important they are. It was the same when we did Saturday Night Live, and I'm sure it helped us to be just ourselves."
French indie-pop group Phoenix may have had a successful 2009 thanks to the release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, but 2010 is looking even better!
