What attracts tourists to Spain? The reasons are obvious: fabulous beach resorts, exotic islands, mysterious monuments, relics of the golden Spanish colonial age, wonderful food and drink, and the warm hospitality of the people. For a little taster as to what tourist delights Espãna has to offer check out what we feel are some of the most prominent tourist attractions of the country…

The architecture and gardens at The Alhambra are a joy to behold – the foliage merging with the buildings and look out points are based on what was described as paradise in the Koran. The key points to visit are the wonderful Emir Palace, the General Life Gardens and the magnificent Palacio Nazaries. Approximately 2 million visitors a year visit The Alhambra and it is by far the most popular tourist attraction in Spain.

Take a Tour of the Basque Country
Also known as Pais Vasco, the Basque Region is located to the north of Madrid and is bordered by the Bay of Biscay and the Pyrenees Mountain range. The Basque region is unspoilt and well worth checking out for some peace and tranquillity and getting off the beaten track. The capital of the Basque Region is Bilbao, and one the major attractions here is the Guggenheim Museum, and here you will discover wonderful 20th century artwork from artists such as Spain's own Pablo Picasso.

Music Festivals – For lovers of popular music, Primerva Sound, The Screamin' Festival and the Benicassim are some of the most popular music festivals in Spain.

San Fermin Festival – Also known as the Pamplona Bull Running Festival which is held on July 6th every year, starting at midday. It started out as a religious festival but has incorporated music, dancing, markets on the streets and the famous bullrunning into its success.

El Museo del Prado Possibly the premier tourist attraction of the capital city of Spain, and houses a wonderful art collection that is not to be missed! The museum contains an outstanding portfolio of works by the Dutch, Spanish, German and Italian Renaissance artists. The Prado is up there with the Louvré in terms of top European Museums.

Fiesta de Las Fallas – A popular fireworks festival, held every March in Valencia.

Seville is considered to be the most beautiful city in Spain, - why not visit and discover for yourself? It is the home of the enchanting Flamenco dancing and castanets, and Spanish guitar excellence. The largest Gothic Church in Spain is located in Seville, amongst excellent shopping streets.

Visit The Top Cities Of Spain If you are looking for a short break destination with plenty to do in an urban environment and don't mind the hustle and bustle of city life, then why not discover Spain's city locations? The capital city of Spain is Madrid and is one of the most stylish capital cities in Europe. It has plenty of impressive public buildings, parks and fabled architecture. Some of the must visit places include the aforementioned Prado and the Royal Palace, and perhaps a trip to the famous Bernabeu stadium to see Real Madrid in action.

So – are you now tempted you check out the wonderful attractions of Espãna? Given the size of the country, the best way to get around is to hire a car. For the best deals available in car rental, check out our Car Hire Spain page.

Enjoy A Spanish Festival Wherever you are in Spain you won't be too far from a Fiesta – so make sure to take part in the carnival festivities and enjoy the fun! Some of the most popular festivals in Spain are:

La Tomatina – The biggest food fight in the world, sees people pelting tomatoes at each other in Bunol, less than 50km from Valencia.

Semana Grande Festival – This festival is a unique celebration of Basque Culture in Northern Spain.

Experience The Alhambra Located in the Granada region, the fortified palace called the Alhambra was constructed by the Moors and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Sierra Nevada Mountains provide a stunning background to the red walls and towers of the Alhambra, which is a telling legacy of Muslim rule in Spain.

The Barcelona Summer Festival – Also known as the ‘Grec Festival' and is one of the main arts and cultural events in Spain.

The second city of Spain is Barcelona – and not only it is it a famous seaport but a city of cultural sophistication. The awesome Sagrada Familia Cathedral designed by Gaudi is a must visit location. The Gothic Quarter, a stroll down the famous pedestrian street Las Ramblas, a visit to the charming Parc Guell, and a trip to see FC Barcelona play at Camp Nou are what we recommend doing in Barcelona!

As for the Island resorts of Spain, well we all know them: Majorca, Menorca, Tenerife, the Canaries, Lanzarote and Ibiza. All have their own little treasures to savour whilst there, not only is there sun, sand and sea but there are plenty of tourist attractions there to visit and learn all about the culture. If you want to party all through the night, Ibiza is the place to go, if you want a bit of history and amazing mystical discoveries check out the Black Pyramids of Guimar on Tenerife.

Discover Spain's Tourism Resorts and Islands
The southern coast of Spain is where the mainland tourism resorts are – try Malaga and Alicante for starters. Malaga is home to fantastic beaches, the Museo de Picasso, La Alcazaba which was built by the Moors, and other wonderful architectural delights such as Malaga Cathedral. Alicante has as its landmark Santa Barbara Castle, wonderful beaches, and plenty of summer festivals to check out.

Since its completion in the last 18th century, The Prado has evolved into a manifestation of the wealth of Spanish art. Today El Museo del Prado holds over 8,000 paintings.  If you are a genuine art lover, give yourself a few days to thoroughly explore the wonderful art collection on offer.
